Dr. Maya Youness grew up in Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan with degrees in Neuroscience and Spanish. Her love for Ann Arbor led her to stay at the University of Michigan for her postgraduate studies, where she completed her Doctorate of Dental Surgery.
During her dental education, Dr. Youness developed a passion for treating chronic pain, and she moved to Boston to pursue a fellowship in Orofacial Pain. She currently practices as Chief Resident at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where she treats patients with chronic pain conditions such as temporomandibular disorders, trigeminal neuralgia, and headaches. Her training has included rotations with otolaryngologists, neurologists, physical therapists, pain psychologists, pain medicine physicians, and other specialists, which has provided her with a well-rounded knowledge base for treating patients with complex needs. Dr. Youness hopes to spread awareness of chronic pain among the dental profession, and has presented at a number of conferences and continuing education courses on different topics in chronic pain including rheumatological disorders, pain management during pregnancy, persistent post-surgical pain, and migraine management.
Alongside her focus on chronic pain, Dr. Youness enjoys practicing general dentistry and strives to provide a warm environment and comprehensive care and education that empowers her patients to care for their oral health. Her dedication to community service has led her to direct multiple free clinic initiatives in Pontiac and Pinckney, Michigan, and she hopes to bring specialty Orofacial Pain services to community dental centers after her fellowship training. She is an active member of the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association, Massachusetts Dental Society, Academy of Orofacial Pain, and the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. When she's not practicing dentistry, Dr. Youness enjoys rock climbing, hiking, and finding live music around the city. She loves to learn new art forms and is an avid rugmaker, printmaker, and stained glass artist.
